Under certain conditions refugees can apply for and be granted asylum in Sweden. These conditions are governed by the UN Refugee Convention and Swedish legal rules. In Sweden it´s the Swedish Migration Board that handles applications for asylum. The asylum process is complicated and the Migration Board investigates every applicants need and circumstances individually in the context of a so-called asylum investigation.
The Board also determines if the person is in need of a so-called public counsel that can be appointed by the Board and whose expenses are paid by the Board. The public counsel must protect the person’s interests and assist with legal help. The applicants has an opportunity to wish themselves who will be their public counsel in their asylum case.
